Some local information for St Petersburg copied from an email I received:

Progress Energy Florida has reached an agreement with Gulfstream Natural Gas System to provide natural gas to the "Bartow" power plant located near Weedon Island Preserve. An "open house" will be hosted by Gulfstream at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center on Wednesday, July 12, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. The purpose of the open house is to receive input from the public.
The project to supply the plant involves extending an existing natural gas pipeline from Port Manatee to the plant. Information is attached to this email, and there is a webpage that describes the project:
http://www.gulfstreamgas.com/phase4.htm.
The goal of the project is to double the electric generating capacity of the plant while allowing it to burn cleaner-burning natural gas (it now burns coal). According to Gulfstream, the conversion is estimated to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates by more than 90 percent.
The project is subject to environmental review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Although formal application has not yet been made to that agency, a preliminary pre-filing review has begun.
